Self-care: An ethical imperative for professional psychologists

March 21, 2025

Workshop Outline

Self-care has been described as an ethical imperative for professional psychologists; this topic has become increasingly salient for those involved in professional psychology practice. Drawing from the ethical, professional, and empirical literature this webinar provides participants with an overview of the relevance of self-care to clinical work.  The primary goal of the webinar is to share resources and to further develop a self-care culture for psychology professionals. The first part of the webinar will review the ethical and professional underpinnings of self-care. The webinar will provide an update on the self-care literature, including examining the role that trainers and programs can play in supporting trainee self-care. A combination of polls and interactive chat to the larger group will occur to identify current practices and problem-solve common obstacles. The webinar will review self-care guidelines and resources for professional psychologists, including the recognizing the impact of the pandemic on mental health and wellness and the implications for training in professional psychology. Participants will engage in interactive discussions to further develop self-care strategies and to problem-solve common barriers to self-care.
